The Best of Burgundy, France

Beaujolais Region - european travel destination

An extraordinary corner of France that is dominated both by history and natural beauty, Burgundy also is home to stunning wines and unforgettable cuisine. Visitors to the region will find that it is an embarrassment of riches, one that they will be reluctant to leave and excited to return to.

The rich farmland of Burgundy is nestled between the legendary River Loire in the west and the storied River Saône in the east. Between these picturesque rivers lies a land so fertile that it is home to several renowned grape-growing regions with well-regarded names like Chablis, Mâconnais and Côte de Nuits. Farmers of other crops also have taken advantage of the uncommonly salutary conditions, becoming masters at producing spectacular savory delicacies like Epoisses cheese and Charolais beef. In this part of France, it's easy to see why every meal is a feast.

In addition to world-renowned vintners and restaurants that Michelin raves over, Burgundy also is home to an endless list of historic sites that are filled with exciting stories to tell. There are still sleepy villages and country roads bordered by hedgerows that may be explored at leisure, but other features of Burgundy sing of past glories and wait to be discovered by modern visitors.

Tours of medieval sanctuaries like those at Auxerre and Cluny and wandering through the elegantly-designed streets of Dijon require a leisurely pace and an open heart. Visitors will marvel that although Burgundy is an ancient place that has withstood two World Wars and several bloody monarchies, it has escaped the ravages of time relatively unscathed. Its remote, unique location has served the region well, helping to preserve ancient monasteries and ancestral homes alike.

A tour of Burgundy invites the traveler to open their senses to a world of experiences. From nights spent in luxurious inns where pleasing the guest is paramount to mouth-watering meals accompanied by some of the finest wines the world has ever seen, your discovery of Burgundy will be a life-altering experience that you'll want to repeat again and again.
